Damon Phoenix Released From Adonis Contact

With the lack of movies being produced from Adonis Pictures and rumors of insufficient funds, contact exclusive Damon Phoenix took a meeting with studio heads and asked to be released from his contract. Phoenix released this statement to several press outlets just a few minutes ago:

As of yesterday, Jeremy Spencer of Adonis Pictures and I met to discuss the termination of my contract. We both equally agree to release me from their exclusivity. Most important is that Jeremy Spencer and I left on wonderful terms and will use me in future projects. Adonis Pictures is not and has not gone under and will be producing a video in the upcoming months. Jeremy Spencer is an intelligent man and understood it was the best idea to let me go. Hopefully in the upcoming months Adonis Pictures will make a comeback.

Well, it's a good thing they agreed to letting him go! Because from what I'd heard, Phoenix had already been quietly shooting with other companies for the past month or so.

Jason How do the small Pornos justify exclusives anyway. Adonis in trouble? I bet several smaller studios will go under this year. The fundamentals of this business have gotten very bad for a lot of US studios. The word at GayVN in Jan about sales to Europe is dismal. 20 to 1 the ratio of Bareback to condom titles in European sales. This places US "condom only" studios at a severe disadvantage. Then you have the rampant DVD Piracy, there was a big bust in NYC in the last month several thousand titles were seized mostly from the small studios. As much as I prefer the DVD's I have shifted my own viewing to online (Blake Mason,Corbin,SC etc) Seems to be the way this Biz will have to go to survive!

I think part of the problem is that porn DVD's just cost way too much. I understand the nature of the explicit content but $50 or $60 is way too much to ask the consumer to fork over. I think $25 or $30 is much more reasonable. The music industry is going through a similar ordeal. Asking people to pay almost $18 in some cases for a CD is far too much. I think $9.99 is a better price, and $13.99 for a double disc CD. The point is if the porn studios stop being greedy or overcharging then people would not pirate and get these DVD's for a mere $5 in some instances.

Velvet Mafia (pt 1& 2 box set) was 109.00 at my Video Store in October. That is insane! I do not understand why a 200Million dollar movie is avail for 14.95 at Target six months after release & Porn DVD's are 50 to 60! Michael Lucas is one of the few who price at a more reasonable level. 29 -39

Howard,

I agree with you. If a major Hollywood company can spend millions on a film budget and then months after the release winds down they issue the film on DVD for retail at a reasonable price, then I don't get why the porn companies feel justified charging as much as they do. Now I do understand the graphic nude nature, but still they could lower the price to at least titillate consumers into buying. As much as people hate Michael Lucas his videos are reasonably priced, and that is why he sells. Personally, I am a major supporter of porn but I won't spend anything over $20 for an authentic title. If I want something I look for it on eBay, and if I want a new release bad enough then I just burn a copy from someone else. If the porn studios wanna continue making money they are gonna have to start catering more to the consumer. It's not enough to just wave a cock in my face and assemble hot guys. I want to be courted for my dollar.

DeWayne - I don't even want to talk about this! LOL... I mean, I just finished post-production on "Bully" and am wrapping editing on my other two movies and then going to be selling them as a package deal to distributors for a Summer release. With me launching DV8 Entertainment and it NOT being a bareback company AND giving portions of the profits BACK to the performers -- it's scary, I will admit. You have to be in it for the long haul to make real money it seems. It's all about acquiring libraries of content, not just putting out a movie or two, because then you get the residual checks and VOD payments from all of those movies in your library. $100.00 per movie a month isn't much if you only have 3. But if you hace 3 THOUSAND??? Thus, Chi Chi merges with All Worlds. Smaller companies merge with bigger companies. It's in their best interest these days it seems. What Michael Lucas has done should really be applauded. It must have taken a great deal of work and financing. xo L, J.

4:28 - Well, they cost so much to buy the entire DVD these days because people can buy the 3 minutes they want to look at online for $1.99 on VOD systems. So the companies have to make up for that somehow and make it more worthwhile to them to even continue producing DVDs at all. Who knows? Maybe someday hard copy porn will be a thing of the past? xo L, J.

6:59 - Thanks for mentioning that. I will try to keep this price range in mind for my movies when they come out this summer. xo L, J.

8:16 - Comparing the mainstream film world to the adult entertainment industry is moot. Mainstream film companies spend millions and they get their millions back -- NOT from DVD sales, but from worldwide theatrical releases. We do not have that luxury unfortunately. I agree though on your thoughts about the companies needing to cater to the consumers. xo L, J.
