Awards Controversy Brews Over Barebacking in Berlin

Over the weekend, The Venus Erotic Expo in Berlin held their 2nd Annual David Awards and it was nothing if not controversial, with a verbal war begun on-stage by Chi Chi LaRue, who snagged Best U.S. Director and whose company, Rascal Video, was awarded Best Box Cover for In His Dreams.

According to those in the know, LaRue seemed shocked that she was even in attendance at an awards show that was glorifying bareback pornography and voiced her anger over this from the stage, denouncing bareback porn.

Meanwhile, Treasure Island Media was awarded Best U.S. Studio and the representative who accepted it gave LaRue a big, "Fuck you!" ... Yikes!

The show was also slated to present a Lifetime Achievement Award to Titan Media's Bruce Cam, but the company refused it in protest over the bareback controversy.

Now comes word that the U.S. companies are disputing the awards as being "paid off" by the bareback companies. Michael Lucas is chiming in claiming, "This year, the organizers told us point-blank that they will need sponsorship in order to give us a nomination and depending on the amount of money we would give they could even guarantee a win. We refused."

Okay. Let's all take a breath.

First of all, that's the way AVN has been running things since day one. Go talk to Gene Ross over at AdultFYI.com about all that. He used to work for them. Not to mention hordes of others who have since gone on to write for other publications where they openly discuss sponsorship earning awards. It is no big secret that those who pay for the most ads in trade publications win the most awards at their show. Let's not all feign shock over these revelations.

Secondly, I can remember earlier this year at the GayVN Summit in San Francisco, all anyone was talking about was how difficult it is becoming to sell American videos to a foreign market. Why? Because we are the only country left that is producing sex flicks with condoms en masse!

Perhaps the reason The David Awards didn't feel the need to warn anyone about bareback pornography being nominated was because in Berlin, it is considered no more controversial than any other kind of pornography. ...Because it's pornography! Not a sex educational video. The United States is the only country out there that sees fuck films as having some sort of moral responsibility -- namely because we're the only country that believes our citizens are stupid enough to not already know the difference between what is safe and unsafe, right or wrong, and that they're going to emulate what they see on a tape they grabbed wearing sunglasses and put into a paper back that was hidden in the back of a video store.

Condom movies aren't being bought by foreign distributors like they were a decade ago. It's become a problem to the point that Raging Stallion is digitally erasing condoms from the screen! There is no hiding from this issue.

Take a look at the polls here on my site. Bareback wins out every question: What are you favorite kinds of movies?, Where do you most want to see the guy's pop shot?, What companies are your favorite?

Take a look at all of the video on-demand theaters. The majority of the movies in their "Most Watched" columns are bareback.

If it is no surprise that bareback movies are now outselling condom films, you can only imagine what kind of fear this has put into the people who run companies who a few years back said, "We will never! ...Ever!"

And let's face it, those who make porn aren't doing it for their health. They're doing it because it's fun and because it makes them a lot of money. But no matter how much they're making, when they see the kind of dollar signs they could be making and either their ethics or their past vows stand in the way of getting those extra dollars, anger and judgment ensues.

You know, if you want to refuse to make bareback porn, nobody's stopping you.

But creating an out and out divide and a public war between studios, not stepping foot on ground that has a different point of view than your own is completely absurd and childish. Not that saying "fuck you" was all that adult either. Let us be clear on that.

My point is: Can't we all get along and be at the same functions in a civilized manned?

All personal opinions of bareback pornography aside, you have to admit, it's not going to go away at this point.

So don't you think we'd better stop trying to beat people over the heads and stop acting like our way is the only way pornography should be made? Don't you think we should stop saying if bareback pronographers don't do it our way then we're not going to even acknowledge their existence at major functions and we will fight at every turn because they are not worthy of the same rights we have in this line of work?

You know who else screams, "Our way is the ONLY way, your presence will not be acknowledged and you're not worthy of the same rights?"

Crazy born again holy rollers who dance in the aisle and fall over backwards.

Ask yourself how you're any different. Because that's about what you're all starting to look like.

We all know where to find the Bibles and the condoms, thanks.

I do not believe in dividing instead of uniting.

I didn't believe in it with the straight and gay porn communities. I don't believe in it between the condom and barebacking communities.

A lot of people got into this business and fell in love with it because it is a family. And it's us who are going to continually stand up and say it's okay for the crazy uncle and the drunken grandma to come to Thanksgiving dinner.

It's only one or two nights out of the year.

jason, you are 100% correct. you are going to get a lot of hate mail and naysayers for telling it like it is, but you said what everyone is thinking and s too terrified to verbalize. good for you. nobody should be afraid of what chi chi or titan has to say... they make porn, just like the other companies. if they don't like how other companies do it, tough shit. buy them out and change their mission statements. until then, shut the fuck up, put condoms on your models and make your porn. in the end, nobody elses opinion matters.

Until there's an HIV vaccine, bareback will never completely take over gay porn because half the models are HIV-positive and there will always be incredibly hot guys who refuse to play unsafely — especially straight guys who join in.

I think bareback should be tolerated and accepted as an industry or at award shows, BUT ONLY UNDER RESPONSIBLE CONDITIONS.

Sounds like all the gay porn award shows are corrupt and dire need of reform, anyway.

A true and fair Academy of gay porn should be created where the INDUSTRY decides the winners broadly and democratically, not judges, not press critics; not sponsors.

There seemed to be so much unhappiness within the industry when LA DOLCE VITA won Best Picture at the GayVNs to the whole industry's chagrin. Why should elitist judges or sponsors pick the winner? Why shouldn't Michael Lucas have to be polite and respectful to other people, contend with a popularity contest and win a true consensus of people as to what's Best Picture instead of be rewarded by a handful of elitists and rewarded for unbridled arrogance?

Any performer or technician who works under the Academy's standards should be allowed in the Academy at first, along with historically significant performers or technicians the Academy chooses.

Any porn production that meets the Academy's standards should be eligible for awards. Bareback should be included if they provide HIV counseling and lab testing weeks in advance to the production, confirm test results on every day of production with the Rapid Oral HIV tests (20 minute results) and all the performers are fully aware of their scene partners' HIV statuses with documentation.

Bareback productions should also be required to have public service announcements and warnings on every video about the dangers of HIV and how to prevent contracting it, no matter how redundant or patronizing that may seem to viewers who are already aware.

There is something to be said for eroticizing and promoting condom use on-screen.

Thanks to successful anti-HIV drugs, bareback porn and meth, I think we've reached a point in gay sex culture where there's immense peer pressure to fuck unsafely, and guys who defend their health and force others to use condoms are frowned upon.

That's truly unfortunate. The barebackers have become intolerant of safe players. TREASURE ISLAND MEDIA's owner is putting down safe players and saying shit like, "HIV-negative is the new virgin."

Gay culture could use a whole publicity movement, involving condom porno, preaching tolerance, acceptance and inclusion of guys who protect their health with condoms and expect condoms from their sex partners.

I'm all for letting individuals decide, but not in ignorance, not at the endangerment of other mens' health and not with airs of superiority.

And what about the three UK performers who specifically contracted HIV on a bareback porn set recently? What justification do you give to these boys whose lives have just been destroyed? It's just more proof that whatever precautions you claim to be taking on such a set, THEY DON'T WORK.

16, 17, 18 year olds are catching a deadly disease because of these videos and the heartless cunts who are happy to exploit naive teens or drug-addicted depressives for their own financial gain and the human race's continual devolution.

I will never ever agree that bareback porn is a good thing, and nothing you say will ever convince me otherwise.

11:46 - Thanks for the kudos but if no one should be afraid, why don't you say who you really are? You're a well known and respected director in the industry. The only way to stop the war between these two genres is to have people like you come forward with your opinions.

9:58 - How incredibly bright and smart you are. What fantastic ideas and tolerant ideals. The truth is, it's up to us to educate ourselves. I remember when I was 21, deciding to take almost an entire year to pour over material about HIV and AIDS because I understood nothing about it. Making a choice based in ignorance is really no one's fault but your own if you're a full grown adult. And that is a choice you're allowed to make. Like smoking. Like drinking. Like anything else. Can those things endanger someone else's life? Absolutely. So it is the other person's responsibility to leave the room when you're a raging drunk or refuse to be around when smoke is blown in their face. We all have the freedom of choice and that, to me, is a beautiful thing.

Naprem - What about the teenagers who are getting addicted to crystal meth? Isn't that just as horrific? Doesn't mean we outlaw Robitussin so they can't make it anymore. You're right though, no precautions will ever work. And I would never in a million years ask you to say bareback porn is a good thing because it's NOT a good thing. What I would ask you to do though is defend the right of choice, the right to have an opinion different from yours, the right to be in the same room and on the same stage as you despite the fact that you choose to live your lives very differently and under a different set of morals and ethics.

Of course everyone can have a different opinion. Doesn't mean I have to agree with that opinion or cease my attempts to convince them to think otherwise.

And if you agree that it's not a good thing, why do you support it? It's the same thing as saying killing black people for being black is not good, but people still have a right to do it. Should we respect the KKK's opinions too?

Naprem - I cover bareback movies for the same reason I feature a smoking fetish gallery of Brittany Andrews. This is not a sex education web site. It provides a fantasy.

Your analogy doesn't work. It would work if the guy being killed gave the person the gun to do it and the green light, knowing the bullet could either graze them or kill them altogether.

You know, I don't believe abortion is right either but I support a woman's right to choose because I don't think everyone should be forced to have the same opinion as me.

And no, I don't think you should cease your attempts to convince them to think otherwise, actually. That is part of my point.

What a lot of these porn companies are saying is that they wouldn't have attended had they known bareback movies were being awarded there. Well, that to me seems cowardly.

How do you get your point across? By preaching to the choir? Or by going to the ceremony and supporting condom porn and its presence in gay films.

If there is an awards show that was brave enough to include both genres, I say kudos to them!

If condom companies refuse to go to it, shame on them for not having their presence included. They're not going to convince people they are right by screaming to their own audience or sending out a press release.

Stand on the same stage together.

Make your presence known.

Say, "I accept and embrace you as part of this community but I don't agree with what you do and I'm here to support the presence of condoms in gay porn and thank the many fans who keep safe porn alive."

But don't say you're NOT gonna go to something that glorifies bareback pornography.

Hell, there were all just at Folsom mere weeks ago with booths standing right next to the bareback companies. Why be angry suddenly about standing next to them in another country?

I have some words for all the anti-bareback porn people…

You CAN'T save the world!!!

Enough said.

Oh and thank you Jason Sethcrest, great post my friend.
